VERIFYING ESG is a collaborative research and innovation programme to create digital tools for making ethical and sustainable buying and investment decisions

What?

As well as digital tools the programme will also develop a cooperative business model. So that firms and community stakeholders can work together to record, measure, manage and report on the risks and impacts of their activities on citizens, communities and the natural environment.

A number of people are working together to construct a building

Why?

We all want to make sustainable buying and investment decisions. As consumers, we rely on trust marks like BCorp, user reviews, and brand promises. Businesses and investors use ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) to describe criteria for measuring their risks and impacts. To comply with regulations like the CMA's Green Claims Code or the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, firms must provide transparent and accountable ESG reporting.

However, ESG claims are largely self-asserted (e.g., marketing claims, company reports) and result in greenwashing, a form of reputation fraud that leads to unfair competition, misallocation of capital, and negative consumer impacts. Typically, only the most prominent organisations have the resources to compete on ESG criteria in investment and consumer marketplaces. ESG reporting standards are fragmented and immature, making ESG data unverifiable and inaccessible to consumers or SMEs.

" If just 4%* of ESG investments are made based on false ESG claims (ie greenwashing), then that would equate to the misallocation of £1.1 trillion** in 2026 "

* WEF 2021 estimate 4% of all consumer reviews are fraudulent
** HM Treasury 2023 estimate ESG AUM by 2026 £27.1tn
